[b]Information I know.[/b]
[i]Ai Otsuka (大塚 愛, Ōtsuka Ai?, born September 9, 1982[1]) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter, composer, pianist and actress from Osaka Prefecture, Japan. She is a popular artist on the avex trax label and is best-known for her 2003 hit Sakuranbo, which stayed in the Top 200 Oricon Weekly Singles Chart for 85 weeks.[2]

Biography
A piano player since age 4, Otsuka composes and co-produces her songs. She also writes her own lyrics. Her music ranges from upbeat catchy pop/rock music that can be heard in tracks like Happy Days and Sakuranbo to touching ballads like Kingyo Hanabi, Daisuki da yo., Planetarium and Kurage, Nagareboshi.

Otsuka's debut album Love Punch was released in March 2004 and was a huge success, reaching #3 on the oricon charts, earning Otsuka nicknames such as "The New Guru of Love". Her second single called "Sakuranbo" stayed on the Oricon top 200 charts for 101 weeks. Surprisingly, Otsuka's second album, Love Jam, was released only 8 months after her first in November 2004 and debuted at #1.

In other works, Otsuka has acted in the "Tokyo Friends" drama. She also has a radio show called "Otsuka Ai ai-r Jack" and has appeared in various CMs. Furthermore, Otsuka pens column in two Japanese magazines; "Love Column" in Zipper and "Love World ~ Eye Love Pictures" in B-Pass. Kimi iro Omoi, Otsuka's first photobook, was released on March 1, 2005.

A talented graphic artist as well, the first pressings of her albums and her first few singles singles have included a limited edition picture book illustrated by Otsuka herself. Many of her illustrations can be seen at the Gallery section of her official website.

Love Jam Tour 2005, her first tour, began on April 24, 2005. It was completed in June 2005 and a Live DVD with footage was released on July 27, 2005. Love Cook, her 3rd album was released on December 14, 2005.

Every year Otsuka also has her own "Love is Born" tour to mark an anniversary of being in the music industry and her birthday in September. All of the "Love is Born" concerts take place in Japan, ending in her home town of Osaka. On "Love is Born 5th" in 2009 Otsuka held a leg of the concert in Taiwan, where she performed a Chinese version of her song "Planetarium".

Otsuka performed at Makuhari Messe on July 7, 2007, for one of Japan's two Live Earth concerts, alongside contemporaries Kumi Koda and Ayaka.

Music career
[edit] 2003-2005: Punch, Jam, and Cook
[edit] Love Punch
Her first single, 2003's "Momo no hanabira", was a minor hit, peaking at #24 on the Oricon singles top 100, but stayed on the charts for 21 weeks.[3]

Her next single, "Sakuranbo", released in December 2003, became the 12th best selling single of 2004. Gradually climbing the charts to top 5, the single stayed on the chart for 101 weeks (almost two years), and a special "encore press" version was commissioned, which peaked at #4.[3]

In early March, 2004 Otsuka released her last single before her first album. "Amaenbo" was used in a television advertisement for Sato Healthcare's cold relief tablets Stona Rhini S (ストナリニS, sutona rini S?). "Amaenbo" was unable to reach #1 on the Oricon Charts and ended up at #6 while at the same time "Sakuranbo" was #5. This was the first time in Japanese music history a female artist was able to have two singles in the top ten in the same week, until 2005 Kumi Koda was able to beat Ai with three singles within the same week.[3]

By end of March 2004, her first album "Love Punch" was released, which debuted at #3 on the Oricon charts and sold 190,265 copies in its first week. She continued to release singles and gradually built a diverse and devoted following.

[edit] Love Jam
In November 2004, the follow-up to Love Punch, Love Jam, was released, which met even greater popular success. Along with three single released before her second studio album was released. First, "Happy Days (song)" sold 163,433 units and reached #3 on Oricon weekly chart. [3][4]

"Kingyo Hanabi" was the second single to be released after her first album. "Kingyo Hanabi" also landed in No. 3 on Oricon weekly chart but was able to sell 148,121 units which sold about 20,000 copies less than her Happy Days single. [2][3][4]

Two months later, Otsuka released another single, "Daisuki da yo." like the previous two singles it was landed at No. 3 on Oricon weekly chart and sold 156,844 units. [3][4][5]

Otsuka released her second studio album a month later in November, 2004 "Love Jam" debuted at No. 1 and sold 224,381 units in its first week. 656,700 units were sold in total. "Love Jam" became her first album to top the chart at the same time it was her lowest sale studio album. "Love Jam" was released in two different versions including a CD and a CD+DVD version.[6]

Following the release of "Love Jam" there was one recut singles released after the album because of her big success. That singles was "Kuroge Wagyu Joshio Tan Yaki 680 Yen" released in February 2005. It's a different version of the "Kuroge Wagyu Joshio Tan Yaki 735 Yen" track on "Love Jam". "Kuroge Wagyu Joshio Tan Yaki 680 Yen" is arranged differently in terms of music and vocals. "Kuroge Wagyu Joshio Tan Yaki 730 Yen" has been described that is more "loving" or "tender" while "Kuroge Wagyu Joshio Tan Yaki 680 Yen" is more "aggressive". This single sold 149,134 units and also debuted at No. 3 on the Oricon weekly chart and was the No. 68 single of 2005. It was the first ending theme song for the TV anime Black Jack.[3][4][7]

[edit] Love Cook
"Smily / Biidama" was her 1st single to be released after "Love Jam" both songs were used for commercials, Lion's Ban Powder Spray and Shokubutsu Monogatari Herb Blend Shampoo. "Smily/Biidama" sold 110,512 copies during its debut week and charted at first place. Smily/Biidama" had total sold 308,338 copies in 2005, placing it as the #26 single of that year. [3][8][9][9] It was during this time, in June 2005, that Otsuka made her acting debut with the drama Tokyo Friends. Unlike most dramas, the series was directly released on DVD and never aired on TV. The drama used three songs as its theme song, Boo Bee Benz's "to me" and "Kimi to Iu Hana," as well the coupling song to her sixth single, "Friends: Sabakan ver." All three tracks would eventually be included in the soundtrack for the drama's movie sequel.

Otsuka released her tenth single in 2005, "Neko ni Fūsen" in middle of the year in July. "Neko ni Fūsen" was her lowest single that year only reaching #3 on the chart and selling 111,324 copies reaching #92 on the 2005 yearly charts. [3][10]

Otsuka's single, "Planetarium", was released on September 20, 2005. This was also her last single of the year. "Planetarium" sales of 315,669 was her second highest single below "Sakuranbo" before her third studio album was released. "Planetarium" was used as the insert song for the live action version of the drama Hana Yori Dango. [2][3][11][12]

"Love Cook", her third studio album, came out on December 14, 2005. In its first week, it sold 335,000 copies. The promotional videos for this album were filmed as mini-dramas. [13][14][15] She also hosts a radio show on JOQR Recomen!! AM1134hHz called Otsuka Ai no ai-r jack.

[edit] Love Piece
In April 2006, Otsuka released "Frienger" (a portmanteau of the words Friend and Ranger). The PV music video was shot in Taiwan and is used as the commercial song for the Toshiba W41T 4 GB MP3 Mobile Phone.

She also composed a song for fellow J-Pop Singer, Ami Suzuki, which was released July 26, 2006. "Like a Love?" was speculated that because Otsuka had composed the song, it would sell well, however it turned out to be a flop due to lack of promotion.

Soon after the release of "Frienger," Otsuka reprised her role as an actress for Tokyo Friends: The Movie, which hit theatres in Japan on August 12, 2006. The movie is a direct sequel to the DVD drama released the previous year. Otsuka also sang the opening theme for Tokyo Friends, "Yumekui," which was released as a new single on August 2, 2006. It debuted at #5 on the weekly chart, selling 63,428 copies in the first week and a total of 145,281 copies.

Two months after "Yumekui," Otsuka released another single entitled "Renai Shashin" on October 25, 2006, which was used as the opening theme song for the movie "Tada, Kimi wo Aishiteru". The song was based on events from the film and its original novel, also called 'Renai Shashin.' "Renai Shashin" debuted at #2 and sold 129,855 copies, making it the 75th best-selling single of the year. At the end of 2006, Otsuka had released a total of three singles and charted on Oricon's 2006 yearly chart with "Frienger" at #60, "Yumekui" at #66, and "Renai Shashin" at #75.[16]

Otsuka released her 14th single, "Chu-Lip," on February 21, 2007. [17] The single was used as the theme song for the TBS drama "Kirakira Kenshui," starring Manami Konishi and Wentz Eiji of WaT and managed to claim #3 on the ORICON charts.

[edit] Ai am Best
Otsuka released her first best hits compilation album entitled "Ai am Best" on March 28, 2007, which features 13 pre-2006 songs and their respective promotional videos [18]. There are 11 songs that span her singles in chronological order, one song from Love Cook and one song from a NANA sound track: Love for Nana ~Only 1 Tribute~.[19]

"Ai am Best" sold 64,396 copies on the first day and debuted at #1, making it Otsuka's best selling album; it sold over 350,000 copies in its first week. "Ai am Best" also features two bonus tracks—one for the DVD, "Best of Babashi", and one for the CD, "Babashiのテーマ". First Press "Ai am Best" includes an Ai stamp and Ai wallet calendar. Some also include an Ai pin (Yellow or White). [20]

Otsuka went on a tour entitled "Ai am Best Tour" that featured songs from "Ai am Best" and more. The tour started on May 18 and ended on July 7, 2007. There were be tour goods such as Ai CD cases, Ai stickers, and Ai clear files.

[edit] 2007-2008:Love-chan
Further information: Love-chan
On April 11, 2007 Otsuka released a new single, "Love no Theme," as the self-created bunny rabbit character "Love-chan". "Love no Theme" was shown on her Jam Punch Tour 2005. Before its release, it was called "I canChu♥" before it was changed to "Love no Theme". "Love no Theme" was written about a character bunny name Love-chan. The "Love no Theme" single included a preview of a new single featuring Love-chan, titled "White Choco." This song could only be found previously on promotional CD released before "Momo no Hanabira". "Love no Theme" sold badly.

Otsuka released her first single after "Ai am Best", "Peach / Heart" on July 25, 2007. The first A-side "Peach" is an up-beat summer song and was used as the end theme for the summer drama Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (starring Maki Horikita and Shun Oguri), while the second Heart is a mid-tempo track. The single also includes a rearranged version of "Renai Shashin", titled Renai Shashin -Haru- (恋愛写真 -春-; Love Photograph -Spring-?).

On September 26, 2007, Otsuka released two CDs and a DVD. The first CD was Otsuka's fourth original album, titled "Love Piece". This included all of her singles from "Frienger" to "Peach/Heart", with five new songs on an 11-track album. The album was released in CD+DVD and CD-only formats, with the DVD including a music video of "Heart" and "Kumuriuta" (クムリウタ?), a song from the album. [21] The first-press of the DVD also includes the PV of "U-Boat," while the first-press of the CD-only version comes with a 40-page color photobook. [22] The second CD was a limited pressing re-release of the best album "Ai am Best" in CD-only format. [23]

Also on September 26, Otsuka released a DVD of her Ai am Best Tour 2007, recorded at Tokyo International Forum Hall A on 9th of July 2007. The DVD is available in a single-disc edition, as well as a special two-disc edition with offshots of the tour. The first-press of the special edition comes with a 40-page photobook. [24][25]

[edit] 2009-2010 Love Letter and Love Is Best
Two months after the triple-release of Love Piece , CD version of Ai am Best and Ai am Best Tour 2007, Otsuka released her next single "Pocket" (ポケット; Poketto?) on November 7, 2007 including two B-sides: "Ticket" and "Life - Love Circle." "Pocket" had Otsuka's lowest first week sales for a single and lowest sales since "Momo no Hanabira".

Love's second single "White Choco" was released two weeks after the release of "Pocket" on November 21, 2007. Similarly to "Love no Theme", the single charted badly and sold even less than its predecessor. During that year, Otsuka embarked on her "Love Piece Tour 2008", her fourth solo tour, from February to May 2008.

Otsuka’s 17th single, Rocket Sneaker / One × Time, was released on May 21, six months after the release of "Pocket."[26]

Otsuka's 18th single, Kurage, Nagareboshi, was released on September 10, 2008. [27] It also did not sell as well as previous singles.

On December 17, 2008, she released her fifth studio album, Love Letter, which has peaked at the number 3 spot on the weekly Oricon Charts. It contained all of her singles since "Love Piece" including "Pocket," the third track on the album. "Love Letter" was her lowest-selling album.

On February 25, 2009, Bye Bye was released as her second re-cut single. "Bye Bye" was the CM song for the Asahi Breweries LTD new low-alcohol beverage, The Asahi Slat.

It was recently announced on her official site that a new best album, Love Is Best, was released on November 11, 2009. The album will feature a collection of "love songs", ranging from singles to album tracks and b-sides, and will feature re-recorded versions of some tracks including a duet with SU from hip-hop band RIP Slyme on the song aisu x time. On its first day of release the album charted at number 1 with a sales total of 22,895.

A new mini-album under rabbit character "Love" entitled "Love It" was released on November 18, 2009. "Love It" was released only a week after "Love Is Best" and like the previous Love singles, it did not chart well.

In January 2010, Otsuka performed a song for the Olympics, titled "Lucky Star". In February it was announced that "Lucky Star" would be released as a cellphone-only digital single, but later was announced to have a physical release as a double A-side single, "Zoccondition/Lucky Star". "Zoccondition" (ゾッ婚ディション;, Marriage Condition?) is a promo song for Asahi, similar to her 19th single "Bye Bye".[/i]

Profile of Exist Trace

In June of 2003 four women from Tokyo banded together to turn the visual kei world on its ear. They coupled melodic vocals and haunting growls with heavy guitars and pounding drums to create what some describe as "visual kei dark metal." On December 28th they held a debut live with founding members Jyou (ジョウ) on vocals, miko (ミコ) on guitar, Naoto (猶人) on bass, and mally (マリ) on drums. In March of 2004, a month after the release of the band's first free demo-tape Hai no Yuki (灰の雪), Omi (乙魅) joined their ranks as a second guitarist.

As the newly completed exist†trace, the band held their first live in March of2 004 with the current line-up. After many live appearances around Tokyo they released their second free demo-tape Kokomu (ココム) in July, and the fans were hooked.

On August 28, 2005, the girls released their first single Ambivalence. From that point on the band pushed forward at a dizzying pace. Another single, Funeral Bouquet, was put out into the world the day after Valentine's Day of 2006. The break-out track "JUDEA" would cement the band's status in the hearts of their fans and become one of their most well-known songs. Shortly after the July release of their single Riot, they were invited to perform at a Meguro Rockmaykan event sponsored by Sequence Records in November. The live was recorded and released on the DVD Silent Hill 2061125 Pavilion which deer barks in March of 2007. Only a few short days after the live event, exist†trace's song "mabushii hodo no kurayami no naka de" (眩しい程の暗闇の中で) was featured on the omnibus album SUMMIT 03 with other top indie artists such as SULFURIC ACID and HIZAKI. The ladies finished out 2006 by releasing their first min-album Annunciation -the heretic elegy-, which came with a DVD containing their first PV for "JUDEA."

Refusing to slow down, the band hit 2007 early with a second-press release of Funeral Bouquet as the five prepared for a coupling tour across Japan with fellow Sequence Records band Gemmik. One year after the release of Riot the band put out their new single Liquid on July 18, 2007. The heart-pounding songs provided the perfect send-off as they began their fall tour and continued their aggressive live schedule well into 2008, hosting and appearing at several large events such as Fool's Fest 08 and Gemmik's last live.

exist†trace made an announcement in May of 2008 that they would be taking a hiatus to "improve the band" and focus on refining the members' personal and musical styles. Three months later, on August 29th, the girls exploded back onto the scene with their revival live Reprologue. They also announced a European coupling tour with Black:List that would hit places such as France and Finland. The tour was a huge success and shortly after returning home from their first overseas lives the band released Recreation eve, an 11-track album featuring a collection of their best songs, a new opening track entitled "Reprologue," and two re-take versions of their songs "JUDEA" and "Venom".

The band embarked on a promotional tour for the new album that took them head-first into 2009 and through much of the spring. On April 22nd they released the six-track mini-album VANGUARD -of the muses-, which proved they were back in full force and ready to hit the world with their unique musical style.

With an unrelenting schedule and the music to match, these ladies of Jrock are becoming an unstoppable force, proving time and time again that the girls can play just as hard as the boys.

Miko Interview

JrockRevolution.com had the opportunity to interview exist†trace recently. MIKO (guitarist) gave us a little insight on the band, where they've been, and a taste of where they're going. Enjoy!

JRR: Please introduce yourself.
MIKO: I'm MIKO, I play guitar.

JRR: How are you feeling today?
MIKO: I feel great. We have a one-man [live show] this weekend, so I'm concentrating on that now.

JRR: We would like to start off by congratulating you all on your latest CD release. What would you like your listeners to take away from the new album?
MIKO: The songs on "VANGUARD -of the muses-" are all connected by the idea of struggle, and I want everyone who hears the album to understand those feelings of struggle and find strength in the music for the conflicts in their own lives.

JRR: I think some of your current fans and new listeners would be curious to know where you came up with the name for your band?
MIKO: "exist†trace" takes meaning from "a trace of existence." The cross in the middle is a sign of the burden that goes with existing.

JRR: How did you all meet and decide to form exist†trace?
MIKO: Jyou (vocals) and Naoto (bass) started the band, and then added then other three one-by-one. It took about three years to find the right combination.

JRR: When did you originally get in to Visual Kei? Were you influenced by and specific artists or bands?
MIKO: I can't name any one band -- there were many. I listened to visual kei rock since I was in high school, and when I first played guitar, I was always playing in those kind of bands.

JRR: You recently did a tour in Europe with Black:List that was very successful. What was it like to tour outside of Japan?
MIKO: The European fans gave us so much energy. We were really happy about that, and we couldn't believe that so many know our music already.

JRR: Are there any other bands you'd like to tour with?
MIKO: I'd like to play with any band that can match our energy. We always have fun when we're performing so we want to be with other bands who are having fun.

JRR: If you had the chance to tour internationally where would you like to go?
MIKO: America! At one point I was living in America for a while, in Texas. I love everything about America. I ate a lot of meat.

JRR: When you're not playing music what do you like to do? Any hobbies or favorite pastimes?
MIKO: My hobby is playing guitar. I am always listening to music or writing music. It's 2 PM in Japan right now. If I wasn't doing this interview, that's what I'd be doing.

JRR: Being an all female Visual Kei band, do you personally think it is any different or more difficult in the rock music business? Comparing it to an all male Visual Kei band.
MIKO: When we first started, things were so hard for us that we all wished we had born as men. But now that time has passed, we know that there are things we can do because we are female, things that are unique. So we don't feel any disadvantage.

JRR: Could you give us forecast for your plans for the year?
MIKO: We are working right now on new music, and we're trying to play as many lives as we can. In the near future, we'll have something new to announce.

JRR: Please leave our readers with a message.
MIKO: We are so happy that there are fans abroad that listen to our music. And after going to Europe, we understand how exciting that is, and we want to keep going abroad to play for you. So please continue to support us and we will see you again.

With a traditional visual look, heavy dark sound, and even growl vocals, the all female visual band Danger Gang continues to defy the norm. Before the release of their first full album St. Beast, they took the time to answer some of our questions.

Could you introduce yourselves to our readers?

Waka: I'm vocalist Waka.

Hiko: I'm the guitarist Hiko.

((Guitarist of Danger Gang
ヒコ , Hiko
Sex: Girl
Birthday: December 10th
Blood Type: A
Live: Tokyo
Born: Kiryu
Height: Around 170cm-171,5cm))
Thera: Bassist Thera.

REI: Drummer Rei.

How did you all meet?

Danger Gang: We formed around Waka and Hiko who were together in a previous band. After that we recruited Rei and she joined. Then we were introduced to Thera, she joined and became one of our current members.

What was your inspiration for forming a visual kei rock band? When you knew you wanted to perform, did you feel like "I definitely want to do visual kei rock" or did you think any kind of music would be fine?

Danger Gang: All of the members have our respective musical roots, but for the purpose of expressing the band called Danger Gang we felt inspired to do a visual kei rock band.

Had any of you been in a band before, and what was your role there?

Danger Gang: We've all been in bands before, and we each had the same role then that we have now.

How did you choose your stage names?

Waka: It's what I've been called since I was born.
Hiko: It's my father's nickname.
Thera: From TheraPy.
Rei: Because it's my real name.

Thera, you joined the band in 2005. Did you feel right at home with this band immediately or were there things you had to get used to?

Thera: I joined liking the band's songs and direction, so I was able to get used to it immediately. I was also able to appear on stage smoothly because the members helped me.

Being an all girl band in a male-dominated scene, have you received some criticism? And if so, how do you respond to those comments?

Danger Gang: We understood this was a male dominated scene, and we dared to form an all girl band and jump into this world. We'll keep moving forward, believing in ourselves!

What about your fan base? For a lot of bands the audience is mostly girls, but at your live shows do you see mostly females, mostly males, or a pretty even mix?

Danger Gang: We have a lot of female fans, but recently the number of male fans has been increasing.

How would you describe your music?

Danger Gang: ROCK!!

Your first full album St. Beast came out on July 21! Can you tell us anything about it?

Danger Gang: It's overflowing with live taste. Please listen to this roaring loud CD of "LIVE BAND Danger Gang"!!

Lately when making songs, what are the things you are most conscious of?

Danger Gang: Making lyrics with a strong message and melodies that are easily conveyed. We also want to make a fun mood and ROCK sound, and we are consciously trying to make songs that give POWER to the listener.

What's your process for making songs, and does everyone contribute?

Danger Gang: Each member arranges her part based on the composer's original tune. After that we finish it as a band, focusing on the composer's original intention for the song.

Last year you performed at Shikkoku no Symphony festival in Saitama with a number of other bands and in front of a huge audience. How was that experience?

Danger Gang: That was the best!! It was a really good feeling.

For your fans who don't understand Japanese, could you tell us some of the themes in your lyrics?

Danger Gang: It's the inspiration they get from the songs, and positive messages.

Who are some of the people or bands that have influenced you?

Waka: X JAPAN and Korn.
Hiko: X JAPAN and hide.
Thera: X JAPAN and Linkin Park.
Rei: X JAPAN and KISS.

Your song Retsu has a lot of English lyrics in it - why did you decide to put these in English, and were there difficulties writing lyrics that way?

Danger Gang: The English lyrics were an influence on us from Western music. Although English isn't our forte, we're happy our feelings were expressed.

You participated on a women's compilation CD; how did that collaboration come about?

Danger Gang: Yes, Gothic Emily. Our office got an invitation for us to participate, and we were really interested in it, so we felt honored to accept.

What are your goals now as a band, or future plans?

Danger Gang: Success on our tour where we'll perform St. Beast! And we want to express Danger Gang to more people.

Is there any country outside of Japan you'd really like to play in?

Danger Gang: We want to tour in Asia and Europe!!

Can you give a message to your overseas fans?

Danger Gang: Hello!! Everyone, thank you so much for always supporting us!! Please listen to our first album we poured our soul into. We look forward to meeting you all!! THANK YOU!!
